The University of Birmingham’s Alternative Resources with Low Impact project, or ARLI, and Birmingham City Council/International Synergies Limited’s Birmingham and Solihull Industrial Symbiosis Project, or BASIS, have joined forces to create an informative, half-day workshop. This event is aimed at businesses seeking:
· Resource efficient solutions
· To identify and develop innovative alternative materials
· To identify waste streams, or other materials that could be transformed into higher value applications

If you are an SME based in; Greater Birmingham and Solihull LEP area, you are eligible to attend this ERDF-funded workshop.
The workshop will:
- Inform delegates of the pre-funded support available via the University of Birmingham’s ARLI project (part-funded by ERDF) and Birmingham City Council/ International Synergies Limited’s BASIS project (part-funded by ERDF). Both provide access to expertise to help address the aforementioned challenges around waste, materials and resource efficiency and much more.
- Provide the latest thinking on waste, alternative materials and industrial symbiosis as key capabilities for inspiring new product development, improving processes and creating competitive advantage.
- Create an environment for peer-to-peer discussions and networking, to enable best practice sharing and the identification of future collaborative opportunities.

10.20am – 11.40am - Resource Matching workshop:
A “resource matching” workshop brings together businesses with a common goal in mind – to save money by improving the way they manage resources and waste materials. The unique BASIS event will enable businesses to identify new opportunities between delegates through the matching of resources including waste, logistics and expertise. Through BASIS, companies can achieve substantial cost savings, generate sales from new markets and contribute towards creating an environmentally sustainable economy. The BASIS team will facilitate a lively and interactive session that will allow companies to exchange details about waste streams they ‘have’ on-site or ‘want’ as a resource. Remember to bring details of resources you wish to share or discuss on the day.

Alternative Resources with Low Impact project (ARLI)
The exciting ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) project ARLI offers funded advice and technical support to eligible SMEs within the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership (GBSLEP) area, on developing innovative low-carbon products and processes.
ARLI brings together a team of experienced academics and engineers to support businesses in developing cost-effective products and processes, which provide energy-efficiency gains in the use of raw and waste materials. The project, delivered through the School of Engineering, aims to identify waste streams, or other materials that could be transformed into higher value goods for construction and other manufacturing industry applications.
Birmingham and Solihull Industrial Symbiosis Project (BASIS)
The Birmingham and Solihull Industrial Symbiosis Project (BASIS) aims to create a diverse network of businesses across the Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), and support their journey to becoming more resource-efficient and cost-effective businesses. The BASIS Project provides FREE support to local businesses in many areas:
· Industrial symbiosis brings together companies from all market sectors with the aim of improving business resource
efficiency by finding better uses for resources, by-products and wastes.
· Conducting compliance, waste, water and energy audits
· Providing consultancy support for the implementation of environmental management systems
· Increasing staff knowledge and confidence in environmental issues and management
· Signposting to grants to financially aid the implementation of capital improvements
· Supporting applications for waste permits, licenses and exemptions from the Environment Agency and Local Authority

MICRA Accelerator Programme
Post Scientific Proof of Concept Development Grant Award Aim of the Grants scheme
This scheme aims to support Technology Transfer Offices' (TTOs) in the MICRA consortium to de-risk activity that has been identified as having breakthrough commercial potential. Grant awards provide support to accelerate the progress of technologies etc. to market that have already fully proven their underpinning scientific concepts.

In line with MICRA's goal of increasing the speed at which innovations reach the market, categories of projects funded under this grant scheme include:
